Hostel Memberships
To try to convince backpacking travellers to book with their network many of the hostel groups give
away discount cards and free directories when you join up. In practise many tour businesses don't recognise
the discount cards, so they may not be as valuable as suggested.
Ekit Virtual 'Phone Card
There is a very good virtual 'phone card and web-mail operator, Ekit, which is often bundled with hostel
membership.
However, in fact Ekit membership is free and available to any budget travel adventurer.
Check it out at
http://www.ekit.com/
YHA Membership - $52
YHA is the oldest and largest international network of budget travel hostels with around some 4,500 hostels in 60
countries and more than 150 hostels in Australia. They claim a range of discounts, but they do run a
YHA travel service and as well as offering insurance arrangements - these do work well and the savings
would probably more than pay for the joining fee.
YHA uses the Ekit virtual 'phone card and email service - but you don't have to be a YHA member to
use Ekit.
The $52 joining fee is for the first year - subsequent years renewal fee is $37 each year. Check them
out at
http://www.yha.com.au/
- or they probably have a site in your home country.
VIP Backpackers Resorts - $41
The VIP chain has more than 1000 independently operated backpacking hostels in 43 countries
including around 140 in Australia. The VIP card saves you $1 off each night’s accommodation, and a
range of other discounts are claimed.
The VIP people encourage the use of the Ekit virtual 'phone card and email service - Ekit is very good,
but you don't have to be a VIP member to use Ekit.
The VIP hostels target young international travellers, and they have specialist diving packages. Check
them out at
http://www.vipbackpackers.com/
Nomads Adventure Card - $44
The adventure card is supposed to be available at travel agents in other countries, or it can be
ordered online at
http://www.nomadsworld.com/page.asp?page=membership
- however to use this form it looks as if you have to book something as well.
Unfortunately their site uses Flash which makes it annoying to use. Presumably the rest of their
service is not as irritating.
Nomads have a network of over 150 budget travel hostels throughout Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Nomads hostels
provide free linen, free tea and coffee and self-cook kitchens.
Nomads members get a $1 discount on the per night cost at affiated hostels, and after staying 6 nights
you are entitled to the 7th night free.
There are claimed discounts on tours, travel, shopping and food in Australia and NZ, and the Nomads
Adventure Card is also a 'phone card with voicemail and some free calls. Nomads offer backpacking packages for
Australia, NZ, Fiji, Vietnam and South Africa with airport transfers, 2-4 nights accommodation and a
tour. They also have "learn to dive" packages for Australia and Fiji.
